Expert in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at King’s College Hospital

Mr Spyros Panagiotopoulos is a Consultant in General and Metabolic/Bariatric Surgery at King’s College Hospital in London, United Kingdom. He graduated from the Medical School of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Greece in 1998. He completed an integrated six-year residency programme in general surgery, with specialist laparoscopic and upper gastrointestinal training, at University Hospital of Patras (UHP) in Greece, the IRCAD (Research Institute for Digestive Cancer) in Strasbourg, France, and the Karolinska Metabolic Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden. In 2008, he obtained his Certificate of Completion of Training from the University Hospital of Patras in Greece, where he continued his higher specialist training in metabolic and bariatric surgery in the Unit of Clinical Severe Obesity at UHP (IFSO—Centre of Excellence). Subsequently, he pursued further specialist training at King’s College Hospital, where he was subsequently appointed as Consultant Surgeon. He embarked on further postgraduate studies and was duly awarded his PhD with honours in the field of metabolic and bariatric surgery in 2013. In 2016, he was conferred the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (England) (ad eundum). He holds full membership of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS), the International Federation of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO), the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES), the British Hernia Society (BHS), and the European Hernia Society (EHS).

His research interests are in metabolic and bariatric surgery and management of obesity. He has been actively involved in many research projects and is the author of several publications in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters.Μr Panagiotopoulos serves as a clinical supervisor for specialist training in metabolic and bariatric surgery for UK trainees and fellows at King’s College Hospital and an educational supervisor for fellows in the International Fellowship Program in Metabolic and Diabetes Surgery at King’s (RCSE approved). His other clinical interests encompass advanced laparoscopic surgery, including the management of abdominal wall hernias and complex abdominal wall reconstruction. Additionally, he is proficient in acute care surgery, particularly emergency general and major trauma surgery. Furthermore, he provides specialised care to high-risk surgical patients.
